Tomar Williams & Special Guests - Live from Antone's Nightclub (Curated by EQ Austin)

Tomar Williams got his start singing lead on the Chitlin Circuit with his family band in the late 1980s. After several decades as a side man on the Austin scene and successful work in Hip-Hop production, Tomar decided to return to his roots as a frontman in 2015. A mutual friend, Nikolas Bouklas, introduced him to a recently formed local instrumental band, the FCs, and common purpose and chemistry were apparent to both sides from the first tune. The band self recorded and released their first EP, “Day by Day” which The Austin American Statesman selected as a top release and wrote, “Williams shows his own soul chops with searing vocals that drip with blood, sweat and tears”.

Chase Weinacht- Live from Hole in the Wall

Chase Weinacht was born and raised in Texas, growing up on and off a farm in rural north Texas. Now based in Austin, Weinacht has worked a variety of jobs when not on tour. He’s worked at a moving company, a greenhouse, and most recently as a music teacher for the Mother Falcon Music Lab and at a preschool and after-school program.

Those conversations between 4-year olds also serve to inform Weinacht’s dissection of language.

Weinacht shares in his Keeled Scales labelmates' care and craft for songwriting. “Leap Day” is a song skillfully crafted, with embellishments used strategically. The songs’ first draft was written in 2015 about a day in 2008, but never felt like it belonged anywhere with the Marmalakes material.

And while a Marmalakes’ song can often be layered in references and polished enough to be presentable, Chase’s solo work feels much more personal, with room left to feel unfinished. The songs don’t necessarily need drums to breathe and a scrap or a fragment can have as much power as a fully-fledged idea.

Salih - Live from Antone's Nightclub (Curated by EQ Austin)

Best known as a producer of Houston’s most illustrious rap hits of the 2000’s, most notably Still Tippin’ by Mike Jones, Williams infuses an intentionally slow-paced, country feel to anything he touches. But for as much as Salih Williams reveled in his ascendency to rap producer royalty, the performer in him longed for a return to the stage. As he rolled into the 2010’s, Salih worked as each a keyboardist, guitarist and songwriter to develop singer LaTasha Lee into a contemporary soul chanteuse backed by a full band known as the BlackTies. Cut to the year 2017 and Salih Williams has finally turned singing frontman, releasing a solo blues single and video titled “Lil Woman Off My Mind”. Dubbing his latest musical incarnation the Dirty Water project, Williams appears to be aligning himself with fellow Central Texas native Gary Clark, Jr. as a highly-skilled purveyor of now-ancient African-American styles translated for contemporary audiences.

Choux Choux - Live from the Hotel Vegas

No one will forget the name of the band they saw Thursday at Chess Club, as interactive vocalist Mai Wells offered learning clues. "Look down at your feet; what do you see?" asked the Choux Choux bandleader, later informing the stuffed audience that "chou" is French for cabbage, ahead of post-punky track "DayQuil." With only the one recorded single and live shows launched last year, the convergence of guitarist Emily Kolb (Sun Machine), drummer Gaby Rodriguez (Hey Cowboy!), and bassist Carol Gonzalez (Manifest Destiny's Child) drew enough interest to hit capacity.

Though those peering through the sidewalk windows may have missed the finer points of Wells' generally alien-humanitarian introductions ("This is about being the entire universe in a weird human shell"), the message conveyed via abstract face makeup, pasties, and white leather fringe. Swerves between spoken word, chatty group vocals, and sharp punk sneer smoothed out under the quartet's instrumentals. Disco strums and Western psychedelia-dusted grooves fell in step under a relentless beat, granted extra intrigue by Gonzalez's krautrock-leaning basslines. (Austin Chronicle)

Emily Whetstone writes buoyant confessionals as Van Mary and Harrison Anderson brings psychedelic rhythms to SMiiLE, but the indie rockers moonlight as sad cowboys in the country duo Harry and Emmy. Drawling slow songs of desire, the pair – while without an official studio release – make the most of the live scene with original songs and covers of local favorites like contemporaries Pelvis Wrestley and legend Townes Van Zandt.

Join Austin Texas Musicians at the Volstead Lounge on Sept. 13, for a specially-curated HAAM Day celebration showcase! Curated by Pat Buchta & The Volstead team. This showcase is a must on your music calendar.

The Avocados seed was planted in 2013 on the fertile east side soil of Austin, TX by Greg Rhoades. Greg is a seasoned Texas bassist, writer and performer with such bands as: Golden Dawn Arkestra, Mudphonic and Starchild. His growing interest in playing guitar and a love of surf music led him to form the band with his friend & neighbor, Ben Prentice (bass).

In 2017 Greg reached out to some long-time friends and musical compadres, John Branch (Hardproof, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Spanish Gold) on organ/guitar and Alex Marrero (Brownout, Brown Sabbath, Carrie Rodriguez) on drums. These two seasoned pro’s joined Greg and original bass player Ben Prentice (Roxy Roca/Diagonals) to round out the band. The energy was exciting and the chemistry was palpable. It has proven to be a potent, fan favorite line-up.
