With South by Southwest in the rearview mirror, Foundation Communities knows that many of the performers who made the festival a success must now turn to another project: preparing their income tax returns. On Wednesday, March 20, Foundation Communities will host the first annual Austin Creatives Day, a celebration of the region’s thriving artistic community, and will prepare free tax returns for all independent artists, musicians, writers, and other creative professionals who make less than $50,000 a year.
Austin Creatives Day will take place at the Foundation Communities Financial Center at 2600 W. Stassney Lane from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. In the afternoon, there will be free food, live music, stand-up comedy, and other performances.
“One of the things that makes the Austin community so special is the talented artists and musicians who call this city home,” said Clint McManus, Community Outreach Coordinator at Foundation Communities. “We want to celebrate their creativity and thank them by providing our free tax service.”
For independent artists, many of whom are self-employed, filing a tax return can be complicated. Filing business taxes will allow many artists to report their artistic expenses alongside their income. However, this not only requires additional tax forms, but a more specialized level of certification for our volunteers. As a result, Austin Creatives Day ensures that all independent artists who qualify can get their tax returns filed quickly, correctly, and for free.
Anyone who wants to have their tax return filed should bring a photo ID, Social Security card, documentation of any wages or income earned, and receipts of expenses from your creative endeavor. Our IRS-certified tax prep volunteers will help all Austin artists file their taxes and get all the credits and deductions they deserve.
Foundation Communities is thrilled to partner with a number of local partners to sponsor Austin Creatives Day, including the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, Austin Creative Alliance, Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts, the Austin Music Foundation, Austin Music People, Creative Action, the Austin Film Society, the SIMS Foundation, and the United Way for Greater Austin.
